United Legend Rooney Heaps Praise On Former Teammate Paul Pogba

Manchester United legend and current Derby County manager Wayne Rooney has heaped massive praise on his former teammate Paul Pogba for his displays during Euro 2020.

France bowed out of the competition last Monday following a catastrophic defeat on penalties to Switzerland. Les Blues were 3-1 up in the game but let the lead slip late on and the match finished 3-3 after extra-time.

Paul Pogba scored the third goal for the French and it was undoubtedly one of the goals of the tournament, striking the ball from roughly 25 yards out.

The midfielder had a fine tournament and was arguably France’s best player throughout. Pogba mainly started alongside N’Golo Kante in the centre of the park and having the Chelsea man alongside him allowed him to be freer on the pitch.

Pogba played as quite a deep-lying playmaker, spreading the ball around from side to side and playing eye-of-the-needle through balls to runners in behind the oppositions’ backlines.

The World Cup-winner earned himself huge praise from football fans and in the media for his incredible performances. Pogba was also commended a former teammate of his at United, and club legend, Wayne Rooney in his recent column for the Sunday Times. The ex-captain wrote (via MEN):

“Like a lot of people, I fancied the French to be champions and as a team they were a massive disappointment.”

“That was a particular shame for Paul Pogba. He had been the player of the tournament until they went out.

“Some of the passes Paul played for Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe were incredible. It helped him to have N’Golo Kante as his midfield partner, but I think the biggest reason that Paul’s performances were so good was his positioning.

“In all France’s games, he was playing deeper than we normally see him for Manchester United and this meant that he was able to pick the ball up in areas of the pitch where he had the time and room to pick a pass.”

TUS Opinion

Rooney was correct about Pogba’s positioning for France. The 28-year-old has always played a deeper role for France. At Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has used the midfielder off the left in the halfspace and allowed him to roam between the lines, a position that Pogba himself has openly admitted he enjoys playing.

For France though, his role has an emphasis on providing balls to the final third as opposed to finding the final ball. Pogba had an excellent tournament and really showed the world how good he can be when he is at his very best.

Unfortunately for Manchester United, the former Juventus man has yet to sign a new deal to stay at Old Trafford and his current contract expires in one year, meaning he will be eligible to leave for free next summer. The Reds may look to cash in on the midfield star to avoid losing him for free.
