Manchester United face busy three weeks with end of transfer window in sight

The new additions to Manchester United’s squad have bolstered options both going forward and defensively, but the club are yet to sell a single player with just three weeks of the summer transfer window remaining.

The MEN’s chief United writer Samuel Luckhurst spoke with Tyrone Marshall in a Facebook Live on Monday afternoon to discuss the latest transfer news.

Luckhurst reiterated that although United have made two marquee signings that have excited the Old Trafford faithful, the Red Devils have not made any significant movements regarding outgoings:

“The squad size is still bloated, it’s been reduced with (Axel) Tuanzebe going out on loan which, was always going to happen with (Raphael) Varane coming in.

“I think with the squad at the moment is manageable because the players who probably won’t make the bench at the weekend, you don’t look at them and think there’s a headline there. I mean it’s not a case of thinking there’s a headline there, there isn’t a headline there.

“There are players who are injured, there are players isolating or in Dean Henderson’s case still drained by testing positive for Covid-19 nearly four weeks ago now. The squad size for this month should be fine even though it is too large because there are a number of issues there.

“I think the squad is shaping up pretty well but it is still going to be a busy three weeks ahead because they still have not sold a single player which is a failure in itself and if they go the whole summer without selling someone that’s just beyond belief really, even though it’s a difficult market and a slow market.”

Solskjaer has frequently stressed the importance of having a big squad and with the likes of Jesse Lingard and Diogo Dalot – both of whom were on loan in the 2020/21 season – putting up impressive performances for the Red Devils in pre-season, there is a valid argument to say players such as these will bolster the squad and provide all-important depth.

“I actually think Solskjaer is genuine when he says it will be a bonus to get another signing. I think United fans need to be grateful that they have got two marquee signings in (Jadon) Sancho and (Raphaël) Varane, which means you will always be lucky to get another significant signing.

“My gut instinct is that they still will get another significant signing in. Don’t ask me whether it’s at midfield, at full-back, or at centre-back even. I think there might be one more just to ensure the squad size is of a good size but again it depends on outgoings. I think outgoings will probably dictate which position United go for if indeed they go for any at all.”

What is clear to see is that there is a fine line between having a healthy selection of players to choose from, and having individuals at the club who simply will not get enough game time.

With only three weeks left of the transfer window and the mouth-watering opening fixture against rivals Leeds United a matter of days away, it is gearing up to be a hectic end to August for United.
