Man City might have to abandon transfer philosophy to fulfil Khaldoon Al Mubarak promise

Manchester City want a striker to replace Sergio Aguero this summer but one won’t come cheap. It was a statement of intent that’s rare from Manchester City’s hierarchy and one that has now certainly set high expectations.

Pep Guardiola had previously claimed that it would be ‘impossible’ for City to do so but, in his end of season interview, chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak made it abundantly clear that the club would be going all out for a Sergio Aguero replacement this summer.

“We lose a very important legend in Sergio Aguero, very hard shoes to fill, but I’m confident we will find the right player to fill those shoes,” he said. “There’s other areas within the team that obviously need investment, not too many, it’s not about numbers.

“It’s about the quality and the squad is a phenomenal squad. You don’t win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final if you don’t have an incredible squad and we have that. We will bring quality into the squad in a couple of key positions.”

The only issue is is that quality, especially Aguero quality, comes at a premium these days. The sort of transfer fees that City have tended to steer clear from.

Despite being one of the richest clubs in the world and no doubt having the funds to splash obscene amounts of money on players, City have largely refrained from getting involved in the biggest of transfer battles over the years
